Colombia, Mompox. 12 May 2014. On the Magdalena River. Mompox is a small town in the department of Bolívar, which has preserved its colonial-era style. The city is located on Margarita Island, an island at the junction of the Magdalena and Cauca rivers. Due to its beauty, the city was included in the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1995. "Mompox does not exist," says the hero of Garcia Marquez's novel The General in his Labyrinth. "Sometimes we have dreamt of her, but she does not exist."
